Home Tour / A Colorful Florida Home Designed By Summer Thornton

When a Chicago couple wanted to create a warm-weather getaway, they turned to interior designer Summer Thornton to design their Florida retreat. Thornton is known for her bold, colorful interiors, and her work has been featured in Architectural Digest, Traditional Home, Domino, and House Beautiful, just to name a few. This traditional with a tropical twist, Naples project graced the cover of House Beautiful in 2016.

The homeowners wanted “casual but elegant,” and Thornton delivered just that, a colorful, breezy home that is perfect for hosting their extended family and friends. It’s sophisticated yet relaxed for the Florida indoor/outdoor lifestyle. Nothing is too precious for sandy feet and family barbeques.

With a color palette of blue and white with shades of orange woven seamlessly throughout the house, the rooms are cohesive, yet each feels unique and interesting.

I like to get people all warm and comfortable with traditional furniture
and then throw in something like vibrant orange to shake things up.

Hundreds of collected blue and white porcelain pieces are sprinkled generously throughout the home, as well as numerous bird prints, which are a nod to the homeowner’s love of birds. The dark wood tones echo British Colonial style and provide a contrast to the light and bright paint and textiles.

Because this project was a second home, Thornton was asked to provide everything from overseeing interior architecture to buying the dishes for the kitchen and putting pictures in the picture frames. All the homeowners needed to do was move-in and enjoy!
